Casinos offer a great variety of gambling games for its patrons and one such popular game is that of craps. Craps is a dice game and can be played against other participants or a bank. When one tries to find how the game became so popular it can be seen that it was first known as crapaud, which means toad in French. The game was particularly widespread among the American-African community from where the game came to be played in casino houses everywhere in the country and gained great favor among a large number of gamblers. Before the modern version of the game was imported in the United States, it seems to have been played as the old English game of hazard and favored by French gamblers who influenced the development of the game and its play. About its origin, the game may be as ancient as the crusades.

Betting dough in a game of craps can either be done in the form of player versus player where it is called the street craps or in the form of player versus bank where the wager is called bank craps. The outcome of the betting game depends either on a single roll of the dice or a series of rolls from two dice. The greatest advantage of the craps game is that it can be played with very less equipments and hence it is not only favored by casino houses as a principal gambling game on offer but it can also be played anywhere with little or no formal set-up like a casino. It has been found that soldiers are very fond of craps as a gambling game and the betting action in such games involving soldiers recognize side bets as a significant aspect of play. This allows one or more participating craps players to cover or make ‘fading’ bets against the dice.

Selecting the right game can be very difficult if you are a newbie player with no definite strategy in place. If you go wrong here, you can be a loser for as long as one year before you realise your mistake. If you don’t know what game is good for you, here are some salient tips to help you. You can also ask yourself why you want to play the game. Is it for money? Is for socializing or simply for entertainment?

When you have the variables in place and know your mind well, read further to know more on how to select the right game. Consider the limit you have to shell out to play the entire game. Is it within your bankroll? If the blind is little expensive for you, don’t play the game as you would be shy to take risks.

Consider the position and your opponents. If you are playing for entertainment and wish to earn some cash, don’t go for a head’s up game where cutthroat aggressive players are playing. You might lose your cash and also your mindset to further play a game of poker.

Consider the time you have spared for poker. If you don’t have much time, go for Sit-n-Go tourneys. If you are there for a long time and want to get the feel of the poker world, stick on to multi-table tourneys for good. In other words, don’t keep time as a factor to monitor your moves. It is basically a distraction that can take toll on your playing skills.

Consider the experience of the players. Less-skilled players do not value-bet as expected. Loose players take away the rhythm of the game. Maniacs or passive players can be very dangerous and deceptive in their actions.

Be careful how you choose your game when stakes increases. Remember, low stakes would help you win the game but not use your tactical skills. High stakes can be risky, but they offer you opportunities to test your skills.

Card counting, as used by skilled and experienced blackjack players as a winning strategy is widespread a technique. It has been found that card counting is combined with basic strategy can give the best winning formula although such a combination is difficult to apply in real life game situations. However, if it is used, then the player can double down on more occasions if he has applied the card counting method and arrived at the conclusion that several ten-valued cards are still remaining to be distributed and hitting such a card would strengthen his hand value and make it a possibly winning one.

It may appear a strenuous activity to count all the cards but players are not required to memorize all cards that have been played and other easy systems can be utilized. So, the card counting blackjack player can devise the ingenious point system and assign it to the cards and just by keeping track of the points as the cards are dealt out he can maintain the technique.

It has been estimated that while basic strategy can reduce house advantage for casinos to almost nil if only a single card deck is used and lower it to less than 1% for multi-deck games, the house advantage against card counting players is also extremely less and ranges between zero to 2%. Sometimes casino houses use multiple card decks and deal out the cards from a shoe so that card counting can be minimized.

An interesting point to note which is advantageous for the players is that most places in the United States don’t consider card counting as a cheating technique and the gambling laws have legalized the use of this tactics. However, casino houses reserves the right regarding whether or not to prohibit gamblers from further playing if he engages in card counting and so it is advisable that the blackjack players using this tactics should not make it conspicuous and give the casino an excuse to disallow him.

To emerge as a winning blackjack player, any gambler may make the use of basic strategy to his best possible advantage but the situations can only be applied over a long term with million of hands of play happening, and in the short term situation basic strategy may not be a player’s first and foremost tactics of gameplay. Since in the short run, with more and more cards being dealt from the deck, it no longer remains complete, it has been found that card counting is an extremely effective and advantageous strategy that a blackjack player may use.

Card counting definitely gives a blackjack player an edge over the casino house and this means that employing this tactics the player may stake bigger bet amounts in the game and stands the chance to make higher profits by winning. So, if a player has counted the cards and found out that the card deck has a higher number of aces and ten-valued cards left still to be distributed, it would mean that his possibility of hitting a blackjack increases and he can make the most of this knowledge by wagering a bet size that is higher than his usual opening bet, for he hopes to win it back at 3:2 odds. There is another plus point of card counting. A blackjack player who is adept in this tactics can utilize this technique most favorably by combining it with the basic strategy. Since the only drawback of basic strategy is that it does not take into consideration the number of cards that have left the deck and been distributed among the dealer and the participating players, therefore using card counting the basic strategy van be made a foolproof winning formula. However, this is easier said than done and to apply card counting and basic strategy simultaneously in a game of blackjack is an extremely difficult proposition, if not an outright impossible one.

The basic strategy that can be optimally followed by any blackjack player for making considerable winning in this form of gambling game is different if his initial 20card hand holds a pair from either if he had a soft or a hard total hand. However, the common parameters such as game table playing three or more card decks, blackjack hand offering 3:2 payout, dealer standing on soft 17 total and viewing own hole card to check for a natural and doubling down as well as double after split rules being validated need to be observed.

Now if the player has an ace pair or a pair of 8, he should invariably split against any face up card that the dealer may show. However, if the player has a total of 20, with a permutation and combination of the ten-valued cards, it is advisable that he should stand and let the hand of play progress on its own. For high pairs like 9 cards, the player’s basic strategy should be to stand when the dealer has a 7 or any ten-valued card or an ace. Otherwise, for all other possible value that the dealer’s up card may have, he should split. For a pair of 7 or 2 or 3, the player should optimally split if the dealer has any value ranging from 2 to 7 and hit for dealer’s up card ranging from 8 to ace. The player with a 6 pair should hit for any dealer up card with value ranging between 7 and ace and otherwise split the pair. In case, the pair is of 4 cards, splitting is optimal only when the dealer’s up card is 5 or 6, and hitting and drawing additional card(s) is the right choice for other situations. For a hand with a 5 pair, the player should hit against the dealer’s ace or any ten-valued card and double in all other cases. If doubling is not permitted, hitting is the only optimal choice that the player can follow.
